The town of Arthur is the home of the largest Amish settlement in Illinois and one of the largest in the nation.
Arthur
"The Heart of Illinois Amish Country", Arthur is a town of 2,200 people
located in central Il 10 miles west of I-57. It's motto of "Where
you're a stranger only once" rings as true now as it did 50 years ago.
The area surrounding Arthur , also known as Illinois Amish Country is home to an Amish community of about 3500+ members. The cultural blending of the progressive "English" community in Arthur and the conservative rural Amish, forges a special blend of old and new. Horse and buggies park in rows across from autos and pickups, massive John Deeres pull huge field equipment just across the fencerow from an eight horse hitch and a four bottomed plow, and the shoppers in straight pin fastened clothing wait in line at the grocery store with those in suits and ties.
A community with a strong agricultural heritage, Arthur also boasts of unusually robust retail and industrial sectors. Retail trade draws shoppers from a wide radius with locally produced furniture, men's and women's clothing, and home building and suppliers being the envy of regional centers much larger than Arthur. Cabinet manufacturing, garage door production, and wood furniture shops employ thousands of skilled, reliable workers and ship products with Arthur origins nationwide!
